About the trek
The trip is dedicated to walking and trekking for two weeks, in the Sierra Maestra mountains and the Pico Turquino National Park in Cuba.
Cuba has some of the most spectacular and unspoiled mountain scenery in the Caribbean. The Sierra Maestra mountains in the southeast of the island not only have the highest peaks
in Cuba (1,972m), but also provide a truly spectacular array of flora and fauna - inluding an immense diversity of colourful bird life.
Included in this tour are: 13 nights accommodation, single or shared room, half board homestay or B&B shared room hostal accommodation in Santiago de Cuba, full board in the Sierra
Maestra national park in mountain refuges, half board shared room in the Marea del Portillo hotel, B&B 3*** hotel accommodation for last night in Havana; all group airport transfers and transport for trekking, nights out to live music
venues, services of bilingual tour leaders throughout.

Day 1 |
Arrive Holguin airport and transfer to Santiago de Cuba and hotel or homestay. |

2 |
Welcome briefing meeting, orientation tour of the city, free afternoon and evening cultural activity. Overnight in hotel of homestay. |

3 |
Depart for Santa Domingo via sugar plantation visit, arrive late afternoon. Dinner, evening presentation on Pico Turquino national park and preparations for trek. |

Depart by truck for Alto de Naranjo, visit to La Comandancia, Fidel’s revolutionary base in the Sierra Maestra mountains, lunch and afternoon visit to La Platica ecological community. Return to Santa Domingo for dinner and overnight. |

Early morning departure after breakfast, 4-5 hours walk to the Aguada de Joaquin refuge, via luscious virgin forest to our overnight stop. Lunch en route. |

6 |
Climb Pico Turquino and descend to La Majagua refuge (6-7 hours) for overnight stop. |
|
| |
7 |
Descend to Las Cuevas on the coast (2 hours), transfer to Marea del Portillo hotel. Free afternoon and evening. |

Depart by jeep to visit Las Yaguas waterfalls in the mountains by the coast. Walk through gentle hills and palm groves to reach Las Yaguas (7km) for a swim. After lunch, return
via local community to visit a rural school or family doctor, sample local coffee and sugar cane juice. Walk 3km to rejoin jeeps for return to hotel.

Full day trip to Cayo Blanco for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing. |

Transfer to Santiago de Cuba, check into accommodation, guided visit of the city and ceremony at El Morro fortress at sunset. Return for dinner and night out to enjoy some live
Cuban music. |

Transfer to the base of the Gran Piedra and ascend via mule tracks up the south face. After lunch, visit a former coffee plantation and a tropical botanical garden and return
to Santiago late afternoon. Free evening. |

Guided visit to the Moncada barracks in the morning, afternoon free and night out to cultural activity. |

Morning flight to Havana and free afternoon to explore the city. Optional evening cultural activity. |

Optional guided walking tour of Old Havana and visit to craft markets. Evening flight back to UK. |
