Inca Trail alternative - Salkantay to Machu Picchu
Trek up close to the shimmering flanks of Salkantay before descending through orchid-rich cloudforest to the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.
Salkantay is a beautiful, though at times tough walk, with the awesome, glaciated backdrop of the Salkantay massif, the range's highest mountain, for the first two days.
Along the breathtaking route we experience an impressive sweep of altitudes; from the 4,600m pass over Salkantay down through puna grassland; from cloud forest to sub-tropical jungle buzzing with humming birds, at just 2,000 metres above sea level.
The trek culminates with a guided tour of the Machu Picchu ruins. This is a great way to trek to the lost Inca City and experience a wide variety of Andean micro-climates and culture.
Please note: You must be well acclimatised before starting this trek - ie a minimum of 3 nights in Cusco (or higher).
Off the beaten track
As we near Machu Picchu, the group can choose to visit the stunning ruins of Llactapacta, trekking an old Inca Trail, or head to the beautifully built hot springs at Santa Theresa. From here, it's on to Aguas Calientes and the foot of the Machu Picchu ruins.
A true Andean odyssey, this trek through the dramatic Cordillera Vilcabamba offers a wonderful alternative for those who want to take a less-traveled and exceptionally beautiful route to Machu Picchu.
